Micky van de Ven scored twice as Tottenham extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton were undefeated in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after 133 years at the conclusion of last season.

But Spurs captain the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the first half to put their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to mount a comeback before the midfielder - assisted by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had equalized the scores a short while after Van de Ven's first goal, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

Beto, in the meantime, missed a number of chances, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to ensure the London club went five away games unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing the match official to review the goal on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and the attacker were in an illegal position and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's team into third place in the division, a handful of points off north London rivals and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and are six points ahead of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven excels in role at each end of the field

Following a drab weekday display in the European competition against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on target, the manager opted for the French striker up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The summer signing was unable to make much of an impact before being replaced for Richarlison after an hour on the field, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an offensive threat to be feared.

Spurs' opening strike came from a well-worked corner routine, with Rodrigo Bentancur heading the ball toward the face of goal for an free Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - filling in as captain in the Argentine's absence - added his next goal in added time as he rose above the England keeper to head home.

The Dutchman was just as outstanding in defensive duties, combining well with his defensive colleague as the pair dealt superbly with the 34 crosses thrown their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees lacking striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a fortress, but it appears the freshness may have faded slightly and fans headed to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's unbeaten home run will not be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' two established strikers - had scored only one league goal between them before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to add to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on in Liverpool.

The striker's form was epitomized when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from near the goal, despite having room and opportunity to reposition for a more conventional attempt that would have tested the keeper.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing Beto in the second half.

It wasn't for a lack of chance. Most of Everton's offensive moves came through the winger and Ndiaye, who relentlessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.
